SPACECOOL INC. has been awarded the EXPO2025 JPO-WIPO Award in the Climate Change category.

The award ceremony was held on October 4, 2025, at the Theme Weeks Studio within Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, as part of the “International Forum on Promoting the Utilization of Intellectual Property for the SDGs.”

The EXPO2025 JPO-WIPO Award was established exclusively for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan as a joint initiative between the Japan Patent Office (JPO), under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The award recognizes companies that leverage intellectual property to address global challenges and contribute to a better future society, particularly in the fields of climate change, women’s empowerment, and youth empowerment. A total of five companies were selected across these three categories.

In the opening remarks, JPO Commissioner Yasuyuki Kasai highlighted that this marks the first time JPO and WIPO have jointly presented awards to companies. He expressed his expectation that this recognition will further accelerate efforts across industries to address pressing social challenges. WIPO Director General Daren Tang followed with remarks on the evolving role of intellectual property, after which the award ceremony commenced.

During the ceremony, Selection Committee Chair Mami Hino outlined the key evaluation points for each awardee. SPACECOOL was recognized for its radiative cooling material, which achieves surface temperatures 2–6°C lower than ambient air temperature under direct sunlight, as well as for its demonstrated reductions in air-conditioning energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. In addition, SPACECOOL’s intellectual property strategy, which promotes collaboration while securing key rights, was highly evaluated.

Masahiro Suemitsu, CEO of SPACECOOL, took the stage to receive the award from Daren Tang. In his speech, he expressed appreciation for the recognition and reflected on the company’s journey and its philosophy regarding intellectual property.

SPACECOOL will continue to leverage its radiative cooling technology to contribute to the design of a more sustainable and resilient future society.

Summary of CEO Masahiro Suemitsu’s Speech

SPACECOOL is deeply honored to receive the EXPO2025 JPO-WIPO Award in the Climate Change category, a distinction created specifically for Expo 2025.

SPACECOOL develops, manufactures, and commercializes radiative cooling materials that dissipate heat into outer space even under direct sunlight, enabling temperatures lower than the surrounding environment without consuming electricity. As a deep-tech, green-tech, and carbon-neutral startup, SPACECOOL has been advancing this technology since beginning research and development in 2017.

By engaging in the field of radiative cooling at an early stage, SPACECOOL has secured strong intellectual property rights both domestically and internationally. From the outset, SPACECOOL has pursued a platform strategy, acquiring not only core material patents but also application patents. This portfolio is actively utilized in business operations through an open-and-closed intellectual property strategy.

SPACECOOL believes that intellectual property should not simply remain as legal rights, but should create tangible value by enriching people’s lives and sustaining society—in other words, functioning as a “going concern.” To achieve this, SPACECOOL was established as a carve-out startup, bringing together partners to develop products and expand them globally. The journey has been challenging and required persistent effort.

The progress achieved today has been made possible by the dedication and courage of SPACECOOL’s employees, shareholders, and partner companies. Without their commitment, these patents would have remained unused. This award reflects not only SPACECOOL’s intellectual property efforts, but also the passion and spirit of everyone involved.

SPACECOOL expresses its sincere gratitude to all those who have supported its journey.
