Award Highlights by the Judges (Excerpt)
・The radiative cooling material “SPACECOOL” utilizes proprietary optical design to achieve up to 95% solar reflectance and up to 95% emissivity to outer space, enabling zero-energy cooling in which the surface temperature of the material drops by 2–6℃ compared with the ambient air under direct sunlight. In a demonstration trial in Saudi Arabia, air conditioning energy consumption was reduced by an average of 29%, with an estimated 21-ton reduction in CO₂ emissions over 15 years.
・In terms of intellectual property utilization, as a carve-out startup, SPACECOOL INC. has secured a comprehensive portfolio of basic and applied patents both domestically and internationally. The company has established an extensive patent network covering higher-level concepts with radiative cooling functionality, and has deployed an open-and-closed strategy that balances both collaborations promotion and rights protection.
About SPACECOOL INC.
Founded in April 2021, SPACECOOL INC. is a Japan-based climate tech startup. The company develops and markets SPACECOOL, a radiative cooling material that leverages the natural phenomenon of radiative cooling to enable zero-energy daytime cooling—something conventional technologies could not achieve.
By applying SPACECOOL to buildings, outdoor infrastructure, as well as people, animals, and plants, the technology reduces energy demand and CO₂ emissions, alleviates heat stress, and enhances productivity. With these benefits, SPACECOOL aims to become a game-changer in the fight against global warming.
