SPACECOOL Roof Shade Installed at Honda’s Thailand Facility Contributing to a Carbon-Neutral Society by Reducing Air Conditioning Energy Consumption

SPACECOOL INC. is pleased to announce the installation of the SPACECOOL Roof Shade on the factory roof of Honda Engineering Asian Co., Ltd. (EGAS), a Thailand-based overseas facility of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (Honda). The installation aims to evaluate the effectiveness in reducing air conditioning energy consumption and improving the working environment.

Honda has been promoting the domestic adoption of the radiative cooling material “SPACECOOL” for some time. The company has already experienced its cooling effects, such as reducing indoor temperatures by approximately 15°C in covered walkways at the Yorii Plant and lowering air conditioning energy consumption in container houses by about 46% ⁽*¹⁾. Based on these achievements, Honda began considering its application at overseas facilities and identified its plant in Thailand as a potential site.

Thailand experiences high solar radiation throughout the year, with an average solar radiation level estimated to be more than 1.5 times that of Japan ⁽*²⁾, leading to significant energy consumption for air conditioning in buildings. Given the country’s more severe heat challenges compared to Japan, EGAS plant in Thailand evaluated various conventional heat mitigation technologies, such as solar-reflective coatings. After comparison, the company determined that SPACECOOL offered the effective solution for reducing air conditioning energy consumption and improving working conditions. This led to the decision to install the “SPACECOOL Roof Shade” on the plant’s standing seam roof, a common roofing type for factories and warehouses.

SPACECOOL INC. has been working to establish a framework for applying this material to factory and warehouse roofs.Building on this achievement, we will continue expanding the adoption of SPACECOOL as a decarbonization solution among local companies in Thailand and Japanese companies with operations in the country.
